Workshop #3: Belonging by Design with Talmira Hill

“Integrating Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) by Design,” will engage participants in considering how basic DEI concepts are defined and applied using examples from the built environment.

The session will include three segments:

• reviewing working definitions of “diversity,” “equity” and “inclusion” that can be applied to the built environment and in other contexts;
• considering examples of how DEI concepts are being applied (or implemented) through specific projects in the U.S.; and
• discussing in small groups how DEI concepts are being (or might be) applied in New Hampshire.

Key take-aways:

(1) a deeper understanding of DEI concepts and why applying them with intentionality is essential for integrating DEI in the built environment;

(2) familiarity with actual DEI work underway in the built environment across the U.S.;

(3) ideas about how DEI concepts are (or might be) applied here in New Hampshire; and

(4) informational resources for further exploring DEI in the built environment.

Intended audiences:  planners, architects,  municipal leaders and staff, landscape architects,  traffic engineers, artists, and others who care about creating vibrant and delightful place to be for everyone.

Meet the Presenter

Talmira Hill is principal of the T. L. Hill Group, an independent firm she founded in May 2001 that consults at the nexus of philanthropy and community change to strengthen social impact. Talmira brings 30 years of leadership experience in the broader nonprofit, philanthropic, and public sectors, specializing in partnerships and collaborative enterprises to improve outcomes in low-income and underrepresented communities. A graduate of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, Talmira began her career in international economic development, was later appointed to serve in the U.S. Department of Education as a Special Assistant the Undersecretary during the Clinton Administration, and served as a program officer for six years with the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Talmira has facilitated numerous cross-sector initiatives and has focused her efforts in northern New England since 2016. She facilitates the NH Funders Forum, serves as lead strategy consultant on the Race & Equity in NH Series, completed a 2-year diversity, equity, and inclusion project in 2019 with Manchester Community College, and has authored reports on the NH Immigrant Integration Initiative and Portland Empowered. Talmira and her husband live in Bartlett, NH where they have enjoyed being part of the Mt. Washington Valley community since 2003.
