Plan NH Executive Director Tiffany Tononi McNamara recently participated on the jury for the Monadnock Region ADU Design Challenge. Organized by Southwest Region Planning Commission, the ADU Design Challenge sought to raise awareness about the real world possibilities for ADUs in New Hampshire, and to connect interested homeowners in the Monadnock Region with implementable designs.

Architects were invited to respond to real homeowner case studies and submit a design for one of three categories: Addition to the Primary Dwelling, New Detached Structure, or Adaptive Reuse of an Existing Structure. All submissions were asked to consider sustainability, affordability, accessibility, innovation, aesthetics, as well as the specific homeowner’s needs, goals, and site characteristics.

The winning designs were submitted by:

  • Hallie Black – “Sugar Onwards” in the category Adaptive Reuse of an Existing Freestanding Structure.
  • Andrew Schott and Bruce Ronayne Hamilton Architects – “Prairie Addition” in the category Addition onto a Primary Dwelling.
  • kcs ARCHITECTS – “Shou Shed” in the category of New Freestanding Structure.

The jury gave honorable mentions to:

  • as-such – “Double Dream” in the category Addition to the Primary Dwelling
  • Brad Leibin and kw-h Architecture Firms – “Eco-Cottage for Pearl and Leo” in the category Addition to the Primary Dwelling
  • Shubhanker Sanyal – “The Sunbeam Bungalow” in the category New Freestanding Structure
